The nationalization of politics that’s occurred in North Carolina and elsewhere over the last few decades is, in many respects, a regrettable phenomenon. Whereas voters once frequently split tickets and displayed an ability and willingness to choose between state and local candidates based primarily upon the stances they took on state and local issues – schools, transportation, public health and safety – today, things are different.
