An Alabama House committee Tuesday passed a bill that would require schools to teach “sexual risk avoidance” in place of comprehensive sex education.

SB 209, sponsored by Sen. Shay Shelnutt, R-Trussville, would also prohibit teaching students where to obtain contraceptives or abortions and prohibits demonstrations of how to use contraceptives. Parents are able to opt their child out of the class with no academic penalty.
