The Senate on Tuesday passed a bill requiring Class 3 municipal law enforcement agencies to meet minimum staffing requirements or risk state intervention.

SB 298, sponsored by Sen. Will Barfoot, R-Pike Road, requires the state’s two Class 3 municipalities, Montgomery and Huntsville, to have 1.9 full-time law enforcement officers per 1,000 residents, based on the 2020 census.
