The Alabama Senate on Thursday passed a bill that would allow local boards of education to adopt policies regarding release time religious instruction under certain conditions.

SB 248, sponsored by Sen. Shay Shelnutt, R-Trussville, would also require school boards to allow students’ parents to choose whether or not their students participate in a program.

“It updates existing code to clarify how release time religious instruction may operate during the school day,” Shelnutt said.
