The Alabama Senate on Tuesday passed a bill that would require all commercial drivers to be proficient in English and provide valid entry documents if their license is from another country.

SB 242, sponsored by Sen. Lance Bell, R-Pell City, codifies a federal law requiring English proficiency for commercial drivers. Bell said in an interview after the Senate adjourned Tuesday evening that the purpose of the bill is to eliminate “bad actors.”
