Allina Health, a big Upper Midwest nonprofit health system, said it has agreed to be acquired by Sutter Health, an even larger nonprofit health system in California.

The health systems have signed a letter of intent, announced Tuesday, and expect the proposed deal to close by the end of 2026, pending regulatory approval. The combined $26 billion system would have 39 hospitals serving more than 5 million patients in California, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
