Preliminary work to rebuild the westbound Washington Bridge is scheduled to continue at least through the summer, but Rhode Island Department of Transportation Director Peter Alviti Jr. won’t be overseeing the massive project much longer.

Gov. Dan McKee announced Wednesday morning that he accepted Alviti Jr.’s resignation, effective at the close of business Friday, Feb. 27, when he will officially retire and conclude his 11-year tenure as the state’s transportation chief.
