Just a day before the statewide celebration of Cesar Chavez, the Arizona legislature agreed to repeal the law establishing it in a bipartisan rebuke of the former labor leader’s sexual abuse against women and girls.

More than two decades ago, lawmakers enshrined March 31 into state law as Dr. Cesar Estrada Chavez Day. The farmworker and Latino rights icon was born in Yuma and later died in San Luis in 1993.
