Jefferson County cleared the Mill Road encampment July 15 after determining the wooded campsite became an immediate public safety hazard following a series of fires at the site.

The county invoked the emergency provisions of its encampment policy after a June 24 wildfire raised concerns about the camp’s location beneath the primary electrical transmission lines serving Port Townsend.

Sheriff Andy Pernsteiner said finding another place to go remained the biggest challenge.
