After what school staff described as a highly anticipated, friendly spelling showdown, a small but mighty blue-and-gold trophy was awarded to Aliera Leonard, a sixth grader at Chimacum Elementary School.

“What ended up being so amazing this year is that in the school championship, the top two spellers were a third grader and a sixth grader,” said Julia Franz, the school’s speech-language pathologist. “It was so incredible to watch.”
