Cockfighting enthusiasts in St. Landry Parish want to challenge a state law that outlawed the practice, but their efforts were dealt a significant setback Thursday.

Attorney General Liz Murrill refused to issue an opinion on whether the state’s cockfighting ban was unconstitutional. Dozens of local fans of the fowl fracases convinced the St. Landry Parish Council earlier this month to take the issue to the state’s top attorney, KATC-TV reported.
