A Colorado bill to limit how much businesses pay credit card companies in swipe fees passed its first state Senate committee hearing Thursday afternoon.

Merchants pay swipe fees, formally known as intercharge fees, to the credit card network to process the transaction. These are a percentage of the total cost, typically ranging between 2% and 4%, but Senate Bill 26-134 would exclude sales tax from the amount the percentage is applied to.
