A trio of Michigan House Democrats have introduced legislation that would strip the University of Michigan of its authority to acquire property without complying with local zoning ordinances and land use regulations.

The lawmakers, state Reps. Jimmie Wilson Jr. (D-Ypsilanti), Jason Morgan (D-Ann Arbor) and Morgan Foreman (D-Ann Arbor), said the proposal comes as Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti face rising housing costs, increasing property tax burdens and growing concern over the university’s recent land acquisitions.
