Lawmakers on the Judiciary Committee advanced a proposal on Wednesday that would make up a $13 million shortfall the Maine’s public defender system is currently facing.

Without this money, the state agency responsible for finding court-appointed attorneys for indigent defendants will no longer be able to pay contracted private defense attorneys starting late March. Next year’s budget, which becomes available in July, would have to be used to pay those rostered attorneys back, plus interest …
