Gov. Kelly Ayotte’s pick to lead the state’s watchdog over child and family services withdrew her name after facing conservative backlash, the governor confirmed Wednesday.

Diana Fenton withdrew her nomination Tuesday, after a bruising hearing Monday before the Executive Council in which she was questioned about potential conflicts of interest, according to Ayotte. The withdrawal came a day before the council was due to vote on Fenton’s confirmation at its Wednesday meeting.
