AIRWAY HEIGHTS – When Mitch Metzger became fire chief of the local Fire Department 15 years ago, he took over a department staffed entirely by volunteers using outdated equipment.

Today, the department includes career fire fighters, a modern fire station and new equipment to meet the community’s growing needs.
