In February 2021, nearly 50 children were waiting in emergency rooms across New Hampshire for a psychiatric bed. They had nowhere to go — Hampstead Hospital, the state’s primary inpatient psychiatric facility for children, was overwhelmed. The pandemic had driven youth mental health needs to a crisis point, and the system had nothing left to catch these kids or support their families.
