On the great seal of Montana, displayed prominently against the blue background of the state flag, there are two references to the state’s mining history. A crossed pick and shovel, and the state motto, “Oro y plata,” — gold and silver are direct representations of the industry that helped put the Montana territory, and later state, on the federal map.
