The percentage of North Carolina households cost-burdened by rent or mortgage payments ticked up slightly in 2025 to 29%, according to the N.C. Housing Coalition. Nearly a third —1.2 million — of the state’s 4.1 million households are cost-burdened, meaning they spend more than 30% of income on housing.

In 2024, 28% of renters and homeowners had difficulty affording their homes.
