Ohio’s forensic laboratories identified a newly engineered synthetic opioid in September 2025.

The compound, N-propionitrile chlorphine — also known as cychlorphine — had been seized in July and submitted for testing in August.

By October, it had been incorporated into state reporting and shared through Ohio’s narcotics intelligence network.

When asked about the compound, a spokesperson for the Ohio Attorney Generals Office said the number of identified samples remains limited.
