Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a tropical plant native to Southeast Asia and part of the coffee family. For centuries, people brewed fresh kratom leaves into tea, chewed the leaves, or occasionally smoked them to manage pain, fatigue, or diarrhea, or to enhance stamina during labor-intensive work. These preparations were consumed in controlled, routine amounts and were deeply embedded in cultural and social practices, rather than considered “drug use.”
