A Louisiana legislative committee advanced a bill Tuesday that would require students to repay their state-funded TOPS scholarship awards if they lose eligibility for the program with poor grades or by leaving school.

House Bill 385 by Rep. Dennis Bamburg, R-Bossier City, would only apply to students in the bottom two levels of the program: TOPS Opportunity and TOPS Performance. It requires students to repay the full amount of TOPS money they’ve received. …
