For more than nine months, poultry farmers in Maryland weren’t allowed to build any new chicken houses, as they awaited a delayed permit from the state’s environmental agency.

Their wait ended Friday, when the Maryland Department of the Environment issued the pollution permit that sets environmental requirements for animal feeding operations across the state. It replaces a previous permit covering the industry, which expired in July, causing the construction holdup.
