Maryland Higher Education Secretary Sanjay Rai is stepping down Friday, his last day leading the agency that oversees statewide policies on public and private colleges and universities.

Gov. Wes Moore (D), who appointed Rai as acting secretary in April 2023, announced Rai’s departure Tuesday. Rai was officially sworn in, without the “acting” title on May 1, 2024.
