The Atalco refinery in Gramercy will receive federal funding to produce more critical minerals under a new agreement between its Bermuda-based owners and the U.S. Department of Defense.

The partnership includes a $450 million investment that will allow the facility to produce gallium, a soft metal used in semiconductors, and to ramp up its refinement of aluminum oxide, a feedstock mineral used to make finished aluminum, according to a news release from Louisiana Economic Development.
