Two Alabama House committees Wednesday approved bills that could require school boards to mandate the recital of the Pledge of Allegiance and allow public prayers and the reading of religious texts in schools.

HB 43 and HB 511, both sponsored by Rep. Reed Ingram, R-Pike Road, would cause local school boards to lose up to 25% of their state funding for not complying with their provisions.
