In the mid-1990s, Mike Dreisbach and his wife Jan purchased a patch of forest in Garrett County with the dream of opening a wilderness retreat.

Some thirty years later, their land, now featuring a woodsy lodge, and a network of cabins and yurts, is set to be reopened as one of Maryland’s next — and perhaps most unique — state parks. An opening is planned for late August, state officials say.
