Both Democratic candidates in the New Mexico House District 16 race, Yanira Gurrola Valenzuela and Marsella Duarte Serna, have experience representing the west side Albuquerque district, which abuts the western bank of the Rio Grande, and includes newer neighborhoods from Montaño to Central along Coors Boulevard, 10 miles outside of the city’s downtown.

In 2022, Bernalillo County commissioners appointed the district’s former representative, Moe Maestas (D-Albuquerque), to fill a vacancy in the state Senate.
