Strangulation often serves as the “last warning shot” prior to homicide for victims of domestic violence, Esperanza Shelter CEO Jan McCray says.

This makes performing exams on strangulation victims particularly key. But those forensic exams require more equipment and expertise than victims will likely find in hospital settings. To address the gap, the Santa Fe-based shelter on Monday announced it would be expanding to include the first strangulation exam room in the region.
