The Washington Department of Ecology approved a water right to Wahkiakum Public Utility District this month for its effort to install a well on Puget Island.

The island currently gets its water piped across the bridge from Cathlamet.

The well project has two goals:

1. Reduce demand on the Elochoman River which currently supplies water to both the town and the island.
