OLYMPIA — A bill that would help protect Washington's old apple trees and rare apple varieties unanimously passed the state House of Representatives on Thursday.

The bill introduced by state Rep. Gloria Mendoza, R-Grandview, would establish a “heritage orchard program” at Washington State University, a land grant institution known for its agricultural education.
