COLUMBIA — After an attempt at a raise backfired last year, senators approved a bill that would give legislators back their longstanding $1,000 monthly expense allowances.

The Senate Finance Committee voted unanimously Tuesday to send the proposal to the floor. It was quickly approved by the full Senate on Wednesday.
