A Senate committee gave overwhelming approval Friday to a bill Friday that would reduce the number of crimes for which a youth would be automatically charged as an adult, a proposal that’s been worked on for more than a decade.

The Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee voted 10-1 for Senate Bill 323, which could be debated by the full Senate as soon as next week.
