County commissioners heard a public health and emergency management update from staff in the wake of growing wildfires across the region Aug. 2.

“Over in Spokane, as a result of those extreme fire danger conditions, three separate fires broke out,” Willie Bence, director of emergency management for the county, told commissioners. “Right now, 60,000 people have been evacuated from their homes, nearly 600 structures lost, 8,000 acres burned, and it’s 0% contained at this time.”
