Nearly seven decades after Keene cut down the last of the elms on Central Square, the deciduous tree for which the city is known may be coming back to the square as part of the downtown infrastructure project.

The $28 million project, which officially began in Central Square this week, calls for removing 18 trees of various species in and around the square.
