Casting along a drop-off on the St. Croix River, I felt some sharp tugs. I thought this might be rocks or clams. But then the pole bent hard toward the water. The line took off, circling. I fought to reel the fish up and in until I finally got it to the boat.

“That’s a nice drum!” said Tyler Winter. “They get bigger than that. But not a lot.”

It was 18.5 inches.
