In March, a Union Pacific freight train more than 12,000 feet long derailed east of Reno near Interstate 80 and USA Parkway. More than 20 railcars left the tracks. Fortunately, no one was injured and no hazardous materials were released.

But the derailment served as another reminder that rail accidents are not events that only happen somewhere else.

They happen in Nevada.
