University of Michigan President-Elect Kent Syverud, who was approved by the university’s Board of Regents in January to assume the presidency this summer, was diagnosed with brain cancer and will not take office as university president, according to a statement released by the university on Wednesday.

Syverud is currently undergoing treatment at University of Michigan Medicine, he said in a letter to the university community.
