OLYMPIA — A dangerous stretch of U.S. 395 between Pasco and Mesa could become Washington’s first to be designated a “crash prevention zone,” where extra safety measures could be imposed and drivers caught breaking traffic laws would face stiffer fines.

But U.S. 12 — the highway that inspired the bill because of similarly dicey sections — might have to wait a while before getting the same treatment.
