U.S. Sen. Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) on Tuesday joined University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center officials in unveiling a new MRI scanner that will help researchers better study brain chemistry and the effects of microplastics on the human body.

Luján, who survived a stroke in 2022 and received treatment at UNMH, helped secure $3 million for the new equipment. During a ribbon-cutting ceremony, he said the experience left a profound impression on him.
