The largest project so far to restore salmon estuary habitat in the Skagit River delta is underway as of this week.

The state-run project will remove diking infrastructure, excavate channels and build “low-angle landings, fords and recreational mounds” on a 270-acre area along the south fork of the Skagit River, south of Fir Island, according to a news release from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.
