West Virginia has the most severe shortage of psychiatrists in the country, according to an analysis published last week.

The Mountain State only has 5.7% of the adequate supply of psychiatrists needed to serve the state’s population, which is the lowest percentage of any state in the nation, according to the 2026 Behavioral Health Report by Tennessee-based health care analytics and market research firm Trilliant Health.
